4.4.2 Steps in the control process

The control process typically includes the following steps:

  1. Setting standards: Establishing clear, measurable, and attainable standards of performance that reflect the organization’s goals and objectives.
  2. Measuring performance: Regularly measuring and evaluating actual performance against established standards, using data, metrics, and other performance indicators.
  3. Comparing performance: Comparing actual performance against established standards to identify any performance gaps or deviations.
  4. Analyzing the causes: Analyzing the causes of performance deviations and identifying the root cause of any problems.
  5. Taking corrective action: Taking corrective action to address performance deviations, such as implementing process improvements, making changes to policies or procedures, or providing additional training and support.
  6. Evaluating the results: Evaluating the results of corrective action to ensure that performance has improved and that the desired outcomes have been achieved.
  7. Continuously monitoring: Continuously monitoring performance and repeating the control process as necessary to ensure that performance remains aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives.
