The Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB), Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) course comprises of twelve (12) papers, four (4) at each of the three levels (I, II & III). Previously, ATD candidates had to pass all the four (4) papers in ATD Level I to proceed to Level II. Similarly, a candidate had to pass all the four (4) papers in ATD Level II will proceed to Level III. Therefore, a candidate who did not pass a single paper in ATD Level I, ATD Level II or ATD Level III will remain in the same Level as applicable until they pass. As a result, ATD candidates would take relatively longer to complete the course which delays graduation and consequently career and education advancement. In addition, referrals can be cost intensive for ATD students because of the costs associated with retakes. Delays associated with referrals can lead psychological and emotional stress to candidates.
A recent circular by KASNEB dated 22nd November 2024 indicates approval by the Board of KASNEB allowing ATD candidates in levels 1 and II with one or two referrals to carry forward the referrals to subsequent levels. As a result, ATD level II candidates with a referral in level I will have an opportunity to sit for four papers in this level and the referrals in Level I. Also, ATD level III candidates with a referral in level II will have an opportunity to sit for Four papers in this level and the referrals in Level II. The proposal to carry forward referrals in ATD levels I and II will be effective for examination bookings related to the April 2025 examination sittings. Implementation of this policy enables ATD candidates to complete the course in a shorter period and avoid costs and other negative implications experienced previously.
