1.6 The changing roles of management and managers
The roles of management and managers have evolved over time as the business environment has changed. Some of the changes include:
- Strategic thinking: The role of management has shifted from primarily operational to include a greater focus on strategic thinking. Managers are now expected to be more forward-thinking and to develop long-term plans for their organizations.
- Innovation: As the business environment becomes increasingly competitive, managers are expected to be more innovative in order to stay ahead of the competition.
- Team-based management: Managers are expected to lead and manage teams of employees.
- Increased focus on sustainability and social responsibility: The increasing awareness of environmental and social issues is leading to a greater focus on sustainability and social responsibility for managers.
- Communication: Managers are now expected to be more effective communicators, both within their organizations and with external stakeholders.
- Digital skills: The increasing use of technology in business is requiring managers to have a greater understanding of digital tools and technologies.
- Leadership skills: The role of management and managers is increasingly seen as one of leadership, where managers are expected to inspire and motivate their employees to achieve the goals of the organization.
