Objectives of budgetary control

  1. Goal Setting: Budgetary control helps in setting clear and specific financial goals for the organization. It provides a framework for defining targets and objectives that align with the overall strategic plan. By setting realistic and achievable targets, budgetary control enables the organization to focus its efforts and resources in the right direction.
  2. Planning and Coordination: Budgetary control facilitates the process of financial planning. It involves the preparation of detailed budgets for various departments, functions, or projects within the organization. This planning process ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to achieve the desired objectives. It also promotes coordination among different departments and enhances communication and collaboration across the organization.
  3. Resource Allocation: One of the key objectives of budgetary control is to allocate resources optimally. By determining the financial requirements for different activities and projects, budgeting enables management to allocate resources such as funds, manpower, and materials in a planned and systematic manner. It helps in identifying potential bottlenecks or areas of resource scarcity and allows for timely adjustments to ensure smooth operations.
  4. Performance Evaluation: Budgetary control provides a benchmark for evaluating the performance of individuals, departments, or the organization as a whole. By comparing actual results with the budgeted figures, managers can identify deviations or variances and take corrective actions. This evaluation helps in assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of operations, identifying areas of improvement, and recognizing areas of success.
  5. Cost Control: Budgetary control plays a crucial role in cost control within an organization. By setting budgeted targets for expenses, it helps in monitoring and controlling costs. Variances between actual and budgeted costs can be analyzed to identify the reasons for cost overruns or savings. This information enables management to take necessary measures to control costs, such as implementing cost reduction initiatives or improving cost efficiency.
  6. Decision Making: Budgetary control provides relevant financial information that supports decision-making processes within the organization. It helps management in evaluating the financial implications of different alternatives and choosing the most viable option. Budgetary control assists in making informed decisions related to resource allocation, investments, pricing strategies, and cost management.
  7. Motivation and Accountability: Budgetary control promotes a sense of responsibility, accountability, and motivation among employees. When individuals and departments have clear targets and budgets to work with, it creates a sense of ownership and encourages them to strive for achieving the set objectives. Regular monitoring and reporting of performance against the budgeted targets also enhance accountability within the organization.
